I've looked into this and I can't see how to fix it.
In Content Types there is no entry for Comments so permissions to edit your own posts cannot be granted there. There is a Forum Topic content type but alowing users to edit their own content their only applies to topics and not comments.
In the main Access Control permissions there is also no entry enabling users to edit their own comments. Under the Forum section of the main Access Control permissions there are options for allowing users to edit forum topics but not replies. Some of these are ticked although with forum permissions are goverened by the Forum Access module I think these should be all unchecked.
The Forum Access module itself has no 'Edit own posts' setting though, only 'Edit own topics'.
If no one else has any ideas how to fix this without reducing the fine granularity of the permissions we currently have I'll take it to the Drupal forums and see if I get any joy there.
Incidentally how the websites permissions are set in the website is one of the key things I thing we should document in the Website Design wikibook as it's quite complicated.

I see you heard my whining.
Previous the last set of changes to the forums I was able to edit my posts with no problem; did we all have too many permissions before?

Not exactly. The core system by default allows users to edit their own content, but a while ago I refactored our permission system so that the Forum Access module handled forum permissions. Among other things this gave us the ability to grant or restrict access to and/or hide various forums based on role in a way not supported by the core system.
I also modified our use of the Content Access module so that Anonymous users were specifically given permission to access our public content and restricted from accessing everything else. Previously the only thing stopping Anonymous users accessing restricted content was that the page they would see wouldn't have any navigational elements on it and we assumed they wouldn't be able to guess any of the urls, which in a system like Drupal with many standard components is really no security at all.
The only other change likely to have an effect in this area is that I enabled all users to use the Full HTML imput filter, which is required for the editor to work.
There's a good chance that one of these changes, or a sideffect of these chances interacting with each other has caused this issue. One the other hand we may have just updated to a dodgy Drupal module. It looks like I'll have to get on the Drupal forum and see what the wiseheads think is going on.
Content access and forum access modules have some quirks when used together. Apparently one cannot take away the rights given by the other ... or something
Yes that is correct. In the Drupal system rights can only be assigned, not retracted. That is why it is recommended that if you use Forum Access you uncheck all Content Access forum permissions and assign them via the Forum Access module only.
However Forum Access does not have an 'Edit own post' permission, only an 'Edit own topic'. The Drupal core should automatically grant edit own comment (which amounts to the same thing) and it's that which isn't working for reasons I haven't figured out yet.
I believe this is now fixed. I enabled the 'edit own content' permission in the Forum Topic content type and it worked. Although I could have sworn I tried this a few days ago and it didn't work then.
Can anyone who previously couldn't edit their posts confirm for me whether this is indeed working now please.
If I could edit this post, I would have changed it by the time you saw it; alas, I cannot edit my posts.

Bah!
Hence people can create an account and post here without any extra permissions.
That is correct. Anyone can post here.
